Pattern Pals - paper toys with printable toy pattern

Pattern Pals! Four paper toy Pals created from paper with pre-printed patterns. In this case, double sided 6"x6"
origami paper.

Arms, feet, legs and ears all cut free form with an Exacto. A paper punch was used for some details
such as eyes and mouth on some. Arms are cut from the side panels.

This pattern is used as a guide. Cut out each shape, trace around your favorite paper,
cut out the features you want and how you want them.

extendable clamp arms, and movable legs at the hips.

Klank is a two page template that has a moderate difficulty level due to the paper axels and
circular cuts required to make the movable parts.

I attended the Russell Brown@MAX Creative Tablet Publishing - Project Wonderland 3 day session this year at Adobe Max. Included was a photography session instructed by Joel Grimes, and guest speaker Maggie Taylor as well as several other experts from Adobe and other firms.

The session focused on photography, digital imaging techniques using Photoshop, and publishing to tablets using InDesign.

Above is one of the posters I created for one of the sessions using Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator.

Starbot is a paper toy that is a part of a series of robots I am making that features a graphic icon (star in this case) in the chest cavity accessed by working doors. The robots are made from a custom template I designed that spans 2 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper. In this case I used Canon Matte Photo Paper 8.5MIL. thickness printed with a Canon PIXMA iP4500.

Shoebox city, a sunset (or sunrise) scene depicting a city skyline, two roads, two vehicles and rolling hills with trees.

The scene is created with Super Sculpey, primed and painted with Acrylic paint. The inset box is a Velveeta Cheese box, the outside box is a common shoe box, primed and painted with Acrylic.

Inset scene is approximately 7" wide by 2" tall and 2" deep.

Pictured here is Mr. Chil Lee before he was painted and
after 3 layers of gesso was applied.
Prior to that the figure was baked in an
oven for 17 minutes at 245 degrees.

Splotty is a 2.5 inch tall paper toy assembled from a print on Canon Matte Photo Paper paper using scissors, exacto blade, glue stick, and transparent tape. Splotty is made from a template I created (pictured below) in Adobe Illustrator and printed out on a Canon Inkjet printer.

Flat template used to print on 8.5 x11 paper.
At a later date I will post the PDF of Splotty so you
can download, print and assemble your own Splotty's.

Home page design.

A web design for a sweet shop England. Design is created with photos from the town where the shop resides. The web design was assembled in Photoshop, with use of Illustrator to create the flourishes, background pattern, iron assembly and signs used for navigation.

Child Page design.

I like putting in a lot of layered details, to add interest and complexity, and the illustion of depth. All with the intent of creating a warm destination that has a hand crafted feel.

I always do alternates, sometimes 2, 3 or 4 sets to explore different color pallets or organization, here is an example of a home page alternate.

One I snapped on a business trip to New York in June 2008 using an Olympus FE-230 7.1 Megapixel Digital camera as I walked from my hotel to the office (seen below in its orginal state to the right). The other was from a free stock sample from Stockvault, seen on the left. Composited in Adobe Photoshop.
